Gear List: Part 2: The Bike

Erebus, the personification of darkness, a primordial deity, born of Chaos itself. Also, the name of my trusty steed.

Erebus the night before a weekend tour last autumn

Erebus is a Trek 520 disc. I didn’t change much, but I did get a professional fitting — $200 very well spent — and swapped out the stem for a shorter, angled one with a shorter reach, below.

Angled stem and dynamo USB charger.

You can also see the Cycle2Charge USB hub I installed in the headset cap, a mark of the other major modification I made: getting the front wheel rebuilt (keeping the stock rim) with a dynamo hub!

upper left: bike wheel; upper right: close up on dynamo hub exterior showing the charging attachment; bottom: body of the dynamo hub.

This hub is a thing of beauty

Mounted on the frame are three bottle cages and a Topeak Road Morph with gauge. I have also installed fenders, a Tubus Tara Lowrider rack, and swapped the saddle for a Brooks Women’s B17.

This is the beast of burden that will carry me and my gear across the country, starting in a few days. I shipped him off nearly two weeks ago and I’m eagerly waiting our reunion in Astoria.
